I originally carved out this slice of the internet universe in 2006 to keep friends and family informed of my well-being as I traveled to Kenya as a medical student. I had hoped to make it an ongoing journal. Well, I did okay with the Kenya part of it, not so much with residency, and got about halfway in pictures through my time in San Diego. Let's see how fatherhood motivates me to spill my inner most thoughts and deepest fears (and hopefully some cute pictures) onto the intrawebs...

2.0

2.0

It's been a decade since the first iteration of Miles in my Shoes: http://jerryballas.blogspot.com/

And with each passing year, my ability to put thought to words has been inversely proportional to the demands of each new role I've taken on.  From student, to resident, to husband, to fellow, to faculty, to father, each amazing milestone that I had hoped to document with deep thought and contemplation has instead been chronicled through the internet equivalent of empty calories: social media.

This is not meant to demonize Facebook, or Instagram, or any of the instantly gratifying platforms I routinely use on a day-by-day, minute-to-minute basis.  Lord knows, Violet (#violetp) has practically been raised on Instagram.  These platforms have their place, and I'll continue to use them.

But at the tender age of 38, after living in survival mode for over a year, with a little human being growing before my eyes, working in the greatest medical field with the greatest colleagues, all the while living the dream with the love of my life, I figure I should be able to find a few topics here and there to write about with a little more depth.

Welcome to Miles in my Shoes 2.0.
